# Where to place your modem or router for best signal

Where to put your modem or router for the strongest Wi-Fi signal, and the walls, cupboards and appliances to keep it away from.

Where you put your router makes a bigger difference to Wi-Fi than almost anything else.

1. **Central and high** - Put the router in the middle of your home, up off the floor. Wi-Fi radiates outward and downward.
2. **Out in the open** - Inside a cupboard or behind a TV, the signal is absorbed before it reaches the rest of the house.
3. **Away from interference** - Microwaves, cordless phones and large mirrors all degrade 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
4. **Away from thick walls** - Brick, concrete and anything with foil insulation are the hardest materials for Wi-Fi to pass through.
