# Why your Wi-Fi signal is weak in certain rooms

Why Wi-Fi drops off in certain rooms, from brick walls and foil insulation to distance from the router, and the fixes that make the biggest difference.

Wi-Fi dead zones follow the building, not the service. Signal loses strength with every wall it passes through, and some materials are far worse than others.

## The usual culprits

Brick and concrete walls, foil-backed insulation, mirrors, water tanks and metal-framed walls all absorb or reflect Wi-Fi. A single foil-insulated wall can cut a signal more than three plasterboard walls.

## What to do about it

Relocate the router first. If the problem room is at the far end of the house, a mesh node placed roughly halfway between will usually resolve it. Wiring an access point with ethernet is the most reliable option where it is practical.

A phone showing two bars can still be fine for browsing. Run a speed test in the affected room before treating it as a dead zone.
