# How to set up your voicemail

How to set up voicemail on your Lightning IP mobile for the first time, including recording a greeting and setting a PIN.

Setting up voicemail takes just a couple of minutes and only needs to be done once.

1. **Dial 101** - This is the voicemail access number for your Lightning IP mobile.
2. **Create a PIN** - Follow the prompts to choose a PIN. It protects your voicemail and lets you check messages from another phone.
3. **Record your greeting** - Record a personal greeting, or choose the standard greeting.
4. **Record your name** - If prompted, record your name for the standard greeting.

## Good to know

- **Message length** - callers can leave messages of up to 60 seconds.
- **Mailbox size** - your mailbox holds up to 20 messages.
- **How long messages are kept** - new and saved messages are kept for up to 14 days, then deleted automatically.
- **Visual voicemail** - the visual voicemail feature in the iPhone Phone app isn't supported, so check your messages by dialling 101.

On an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, Apple's Live Voicemail is turned on by default. It answers missed calls on your phone after about 15 seconds, so callers hear a different greeting and their messages don't reach 101. To use your Lightning IP voicemail instead, go to Settings, then Apps, then Phone, and turn off Live Voicemail.

Keep your PIN somewhere safe. You won't usually need it when checking messages from your own phone, but you will when calling in from another phone.
