Checking your phone is unlocked and compatible with our network
How to check your phone is unlocked and compatible with the Telstra Wholesale Mobile Network before you put a Lightning IP SIM in it.
If you're bringing your own phone, it needs to be unlocked and compatible with our network.
Checking it's unlocked
A phone bought outright, or fully paid off on a plan, is usually unlocked. If you're not sure, try a SIM from a different provider - if it connects, your phone is unlocked. Phones locked to Telstra usually work with our service, as it runs on the Telstra Wholesale Mobile Network.
If it's locked
Contact the provider that originally supplied the phone and ask for it to be unlocked. This is often free once any contract or repayment plan is finished.
Checking it's compatible
- VoLTE support - with Australia's 3G networks switched off, your phone must support VoLTE (voice calling over 4G and 5G) to make calls, including to emergency services.
- The right network bands - your phone needs to support 4G on the 700MHz band (band 28), which is used across much of the network. 5G phones should support the 3.6GHz band (n78).
- Australian models - most phones sold in Australia in the last several years are compatible. Imported phones may not support all the network bands used here.
Phones that can't make emergency (000) calls on the network are blocked from it. If your phone is affected, you'll receive up to three SMS warnings and hear a recorded message when making calls, and the phone is blocked about four to five weeks after the first SMS. Your service isn't cancelled - moving your SIM to a compatible phone gets you going again.
If you're unsure about an older or imported phone, contact us to check before you order.
