About your 4G Backup Service
What the Service is, the network it runs on, and the internet Service it must be attached to.
1. What your 4G Backup Service is
The 4G Backup Service is a mobile broadband Service supplied on a SIM card, designed to keep a premises connected to the internet while the fixed internet Service at that premises is unavailable.
It is a data-only Service. It does not include a phone number for making or receiving calls, and it is not itself a telephone service. Where a phone service runs over your internet connection, that service may continue to work while you are failed over — subject to the limits described in How failover actually behaves below.
Your Critical Information Summary sets out the Charges for your 4G Backup Service, its data allowance and any add-ons. The rest of this Section explains how the Service works, what it is for, and the things you should understand before you rely on it.
These terms apply in addition to Section A (General Terms), Section C (Common Terms) and the policies in Section D.
TL;DR
A mobile data connection that keeps your site online when your fixed internet Service is down. It is a failover service, not a second internet plan.
2. Your 4G Backup Service runs on the Optus mobile network
We supply the 4G Backup Service over the Optus mobile network. This is a different network from the one our mobile Services use — those are supplied over the Telstra Wholesale Mobile Network.
We are telling you this plainly because it matters. The wholesale terms on which we buy Telstra mobile services do not permit those services to be used as a back-up or failover connection, so we built this product on a different network rather than sell you something that could be barred later. See Mobile Services must not be used for machine-to-machine or back-up connections in our Acceptable Use Policy (Section D).
The practical consequence is that:
(a) coverage, signal strength and performance at your premises may be different from what you or your staff experience on a Telstra-based mobile Service at the same address, and sometimes on the same desk; (b) a site with excellent Telstra mobile coverage can still be a poor site for this Service, and the reverse is also true; and (c) during a regional or network-wide event, the two networks may be affected differently.
We do not own or operate the Optus network, and we do not control its coverage, capacity, technology or the timing of its upgrades or maintenance. See Our network and our Suppliers in Section C.
TL;DR
This Service uses the Optus mobile network. Our mobile plans use the Telstra Wholesale Mobile Network. They are different networks, and they behave differently at the same address.
3. Your 4G Backup Service must be coupled with a Lightning IP internet Service
The 4G Backup Service is only supplied together with an active Lightning IP internet Service at the same premises. We do not sell it as a standalone connection, and it is not a substitute for a fixed internet connection.
This means:
(a) if your internet Service at that premises is cancelled by you or by us, transferred to another provider, or otherwise ends, your 4G Backup Service ends at the same time, and we will stop charging for it from that date; (b) if you move premises, the 4G Backup Service moves with the internet Service it is coupled to — tell us, so we can check coverage at the new address before you rely on it; and (c) we cannot leave the 4G Backup Service running on its own after the internet Service ends, even if you would like us to.
If you need a standalone mobile data connection, or connectivity at a site where no fixed Service is available, talk to us before you order. There are other products for that, and we would rather put you on the right one.
The 4G Backup Service is supplied month to month with no minimum term. You can cancel it at any time without cancelling your internet Service — see Ending your Agreement (by you) and After your Service ends in Section A.
TL;DR
We only supply this Service alongside an active internet Service from us at the same premises. It is not sold on its own, and it ends when that internet Service ends.
