Which phones and plans are eligible for a companion watch eSIM
The phone plans, phones and smartwatches that work with a companion eSIM.
A companion eSIM needs your phone plan, your phone and your watch to all meet the network's requirements. If any of them doesn't, the setup screen shows an error and you won't be able to continue.
Plan requirements
- An active 5G mobile plan. Companion plans aren't available on 4G-only plans or on data-only (mobile broadband) plans.
- VoLTE calling. Your phone needs to support VoLTE (voice calling over 4G and 5G), which almost all recent phones do.
- Changing plans. Moving between eligible 5G plans doesn't affect your companion plan. To move to a plan that isn't eligible, you'll need to cancel your companion plan first.
Compatible phones
- Apple - iPhone 6 series or later, including iPhone SE.
- Samsung - Galaxy S8 series or later, Note5 or later, Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series, Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy J2 Pro.
- Google and other brands - not supported for companion plans.
Compatible smartwatches
Only GPS + Cellular models work, because they contain the eSIM a companion plan needs.
- Apple - Apple Watch Series 4 or later, including Apple Watch Ultra.
- Samsung - Galaxy Watch Active2, Galaxy Watch3 series, and Galaxy Watch4 or later, including Galaxy Watch Ultra.
Three rules to remember
- Stay in the family. Your watch and phone must be the same brand - an Apple Watch with an iPhone, or a Galaxy Watch with a Samsung phone.
- Update your software. Make sure both your phone and watch are running the latest software version.
- Phones and watches only. Companion plans can't be used with tablets or other wearables.
If you're buying a new watch to use with a companion plan, check it's the GPS + Cellular model. GPS-only watches can't connect to the mobile network.
