Does unused data roll over to next month?
How data banking works on Lightning IP mobile plans, the order your data is used in, and when banked data is lost.
Yes. Any data you haven't used by the end of your billing period - from your plan's included data and from any top-ups - is banked and carried over to your next period, so you don't lose data you've paid for.
How data banking works
- Included data - your plan's full monthly data allowance is available from the first day of each billing period, on the 28th. Anything you haven't used by the 27th is banked.
- Top-up data - any automatic or manual top-up data you haven't used by the end of the billing period is banked too.
- A fresh allowance each period - your banked data is added on top of your new monthly allowance.
- Monthly data is used first - each period, your plan's included data is used before your data bank. Your banked data is then used before any automatic top-ups are charged.
- Bank up to 1000GB - you can build up a data bank of up to 1000GB. Some older plans that are no longer available to new customers have a limit of 500GB. Once your bank is full, any extra unused data at the end of the period isn't carried over.
For example, if you're on a 65GB plan and only use 50GB this billing period, the remaining 15GB is banked. Next period, you'll have your fresh 65GB plus the 15GB in your data bank.
Things that affect your data bank
- Moving to a larger plan - your banked data stays with you.
- Moving to a smaller plan - your banked data is lost, so use it up before you downgrade.
- Sharing - banked data belongs to your mobile number and can't be shared with or given to another service.
Checking your data bank
Text BAL to 179 from your Lightning IP mobile. You'll receive an SMS showing how much of your plan's data you've used this billing period, along with your remaining banked data.
Banked data can only be used in Australia, not while roaming overseas.
