What happens when you run out of data

What happens when you reach your plan's included data, and your options for the rest of the month.

When you reach your plan's included data, your phone keeps working at normal speed. We first draw on any data in your data bank. Once that's used up too, we automatically add a 2GB data top-up, charged on your next bill. You can receive up to five automatic top-ups in each billing period, until your allowance resets on the 28th. Any top-up data you haven't used by then is banked and carried over to your next period.

Your options for the rest of the month

  • Keep using data as normal - banked data is used first, and any automatic top-ups you receive appear on your next bill.
  • Cut back until the 28th - connect to Wi-Fi wherever you can, and turn off video autoplay, automatic app updates and background data for apps that don't need it.
  • Move to a larger plan - if you often run out, a plan with more data may cost less than paying for top-ups each month. Contact us and we'll help you choose.
  • Turn off extra charges - if you'd rather your data simply stopped than receive top-ups, contact us and we'll restrict extra charges on your service.

If you've used all five auto top-ups

Your data stops until your next billing period. If you need more before then, contact our team to add a 1GB top-up, or a recurring 5GB monthly data add-on.

Overseas

Your plan's data, banked data and automatic top-ups can only be used in Australia. If you're travelling, you'll need a travel pack for data overseas.

Smartwatch companion plans

If you have a companion eSIM plan for your watch, its 1GB allowance is separate from your phone's data. When your watch runs out, its data pauses until the next billing period, with no top-ups or extra charges.

Text BAL to 179 any time to check how much data you've used and your data bank balance. See our guide on what happens if you exceed your included data for more on how top-ups work, and our plan pages for current top-up pricing.
