Understanding data limits and fair use policies

The fine print most people skim past on an internet plan: what data limits and fair use policies mean, and why they're worth reading before you sign up.

Person reading through a plan agreement

Most Lightning IP plans are unlimited, but "unlimited" and "unrestricted" aren't always the same thing across the industry — here's what to actually look for in the fine print.

What "unlimited data" really means

Unlimited data means there's no hard cap that cuts off your connection once you hit a certain number of gigabytes in a month. It doesn't automatically mean there's no fair use policy at all.

Fair use policies, explained

A fair use policy exists to stop a small number of extremely high-usage connections from degrading the network for everyone else. In practice, it almost never affects typical households — streaming, gaming, video calls and remote work are all well within normal use.

What to check before you sign up

  • Whether the plan is genuinely unlimited or capped with excess charges
  • Whether there's any speed reduction after a usage threshold
  • Whether off-peak or "anytime" data is treated differently

Our approach

Our home and business plans are unlimited with no fair use throttling for normal household or small business use. If you're running something unusually data-intensive — like a server or 24/7 surveillance upload — talk to us first so we can recommend the right plan.
