Faster speeds

Faster internet, without the guesswork

Find out what's slowing you down, and what a faster plan, a fibre upgrade or better Wi-Fi could unlock at your address.

What actually makes internet faster?

The speed you experience depends on four things: the nbn™ technology at your address, your plan's speed tier, how busy the network is (especially 7pm to 11pm), and your in-home setup — Wi-Fi is often the real bottleneck.

On FTTP and HFC you can move up to our fastest tiers. On FTTN or FTTC, you may be able to upgrade to full fibre at eligible premises by moving to a faster plan. And if some rooms are slow, mesh Wi-Fi often makes a bigger difference than a new plan.

Start by running an accurate speed test, or read why your internet may be slower than expected.

Quick wins

  • Run an accurate speed test with a cable
  • Move up a speed tier on the same connection
  • Upgrade from FTTN or FTTC to full fibre
  • Add mesh Wi-Fi for rooms with a weak signal

Frequently asked questions

Actual speeds depend on your nbn connection type, the plan you have chosen, network congestion, and your in-home setup. Our typical busy-period (evening) speeds are published in our Critical Information Summaries. Most customers on our Standard and above plans see consistent speeds during peak times.

Selected premises currently connected by Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) can be upgraded to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). Eligibility is set by nbn Co and includes, among other things, your premises being designated as a simple premises and ordering a plan on an eligible speed tier. Check your address or contact us and we'll confirm what's available.

Eligible premises can be upgraded for $0 when you move to an eligible higher-speed plan. Where an address isn't part of an area upgrade program, a paid on-demand upgrade may sometimes be available instead - we'll confirm which applies before anything is booked. Conditions, eligibility criteria and costs apply.

You can use your own compatible modem or router - just make sure it supports your nbn connection type. If you would prefer a pre-configured device that works straight out of the box, we offer a range of modem options you can add to your order.

After years with the big providers, switching to Lightning IP was night and day. When I had a connection issue during a work day, I spoke to a real person within two minutes. They fixed it and followed up the next day. That kind of service does not exist with the big companies.
