Can I use my mobile overseas?

How to use your Lightning IP mobile while travelling, with travel packs and Wi-Fi calling.

Yes - you can use your existing mobile number overseas for calls, texts and data in around 70 countries, including New Zealand, the USA, the UK, Canada, most of Europe and much of Asia and the Pacific, without needing a local SIM.

How it works

Roaming on our mobile plans works through travel packs. There's no pay-as-you-go roaming, so you only pay for the pack you choose, and there are no surprise roaming charges.

  • ROAM3 - 3GB data, 300 minutes and 300 SMS, valid for 3 days
  • ROAM5 - 5GB data, 30 minutes and 30 SMS, valid for 7 days
  • ROAM10 - 10GB data, 60 minutes and 60 SMS, valid for 14 days

When you arrive, you'll receive a welcome SMS. Text the pack code to 179 to activate it - sending the code is free.

Before you travel

  • Contact us to confirm international roaming is turned on for your service.
  • Check your destination is covered by travel packs.
  • Turn on Wi-Fi calling so you can make and receive calls over Wi-Fi, with or without a pack.
  • Check your phone supports VoLTE roaming - in a growing number of countries, calls can only be made over 4G, which needs a phone that supports VoLTE when roaming. Most recent phones do.

Things to know

  • Your plan's data, banked data and automatic top-ups can't be used overseas.
  • Mobile broadband (data-only) services can't roam, because the devices they're used in usually can't receive the SMS needed to activate a pack.
  • Smartwatch companion plans work in Australia only.
