Using Wi-Fi calling overseas

How to use Wi-Fi calling to make calls and send texts while you're overseas, how to turn it on, and how those calls are charged.

Wi-Fi calling lets you make and receive calls and texts over an internet connection instead of the mobile network. Overseas, it's a handy way to stay in touch with people back home wherever you have Wi-Fi - with or without a travel pack.

Setting it up

Turn on Wi-Fi calling in your phone's settings before you travel - it usually needs to be switched on while you're still in Australia the first time. Once it's on, your phone uses it automatically whenever you're connected to a suitable Wi-Fi network. There's no app to download.

If you want to be sure a call goes over Wi-Fi rather than an overseas mobile network, turn on flight mode and then turn Wi-Fi back on.

Things to know

  • No travel pack needed - Wi-Fi calling works overseas whether or not you've activated a travel pack.
  • Calls to Australia only - over Wi-Fi calling, you can call Australian numbers, charged as standard national calls as if you were in Australia. Calls to overseas numbers can't be made over Wi-Fi calling.
  • Wi-Fi costs are separate - if the Wi-Fi network charges for access, that's between you and the Wi-Fi provider.
  • Call quality depends on the strength and speed of the Wi-Fi connection. Busy public hotspots may not be good enough for calls.
  • Call forwarding - you can't change your call forwarding settings while you're on Wi-Fi calling. Make any changes before you leave.
  • Emergency calls - overseas, dial 112 over the mobile network to reach local emergency services. Emergency calls over Wi-Fi calling may not work in every country.

Wi-Fi calling is a useful way to stay reachable overseas, particularly in places where travel packs aren't available or mobile coverage is patchy.
