What to do if roaming isn't working when you land
Troubleshooting steps if your phone won't connect to a network overseas, from roaming settings and network selection to checking your travel pack.
If your phone won't connect or you can't use your service after you land, a few quick checks usually fix it.
- Check you've activated a travel pack There's no pay-as-you-go roaming, so you'll need an active pack to make calls or use data. Text the pack code from your welcome SMS (for example, ROAM5) to 179.
- Check data roaming is on In your phone's mobile network settings, make sure data roaming is switched on.
- Turn flight mode on and off This makes your phone search for and connect to an available network.
- Restart your phone A restart often fixes a phone that's stuck trying to connect.
- Choose a network manually If you still can't connect, turn off automatic network selection and pick a local network from the list.
- Check roaming is supported If your welcome message said roaming isn't supported in this country, travel packs aren't available there. Use Wi-Fi or a local SIM instead.
- If data works but calls don't Some countries only carry calls over 4G, which needs a phone that supports VoLTE when roaming. Use Wi-Fi calling for calls back to Australia in the meantime.
- Contact us If it still isn't working, get in touch. International roaming needs to be turned on before you leave Australia, so we'll check it's enabled on your service.
Before you travel, save our email address and turn on Wi-Fi calling, so you can still reach us over Wi-Fi if your phone won't connect.
