Getting an international roaming add-on before you travel
Travel pack options, and how to activate one by SMS when you arrive overseas.
Travel packs are how you use your Lightning IP mobile overseas. Each pack gives you a set amount of data, calls and texts for a fixed price, and you activate it yourself by SMS once you arrive.
Available packs
- ROAM3 - 3GB data, 300 minutes of calls and 300 SMS, valid for 3 days
- ROAM5 - 5GB data, 30 minutes of calls and 30 SMS, valid for 7 days
- ROAM10 - 10GB data, 60 minutes of calls and 60 SMS, valid for 14 days
Every pack also includes Wi-Fi calling and texting. Packs are available in around 70 destinations, including New Zealand, the USA, Canada, the UK, most of Europe, and much of Asia and the Pacific, but not every country. For current travel pack prices, see our SIM only plans page or contact us before you travel. Packs are charged on the bill after you use them.
Before you leave
- Contact us to turn on international roaming - roaming needs to be enabled on your service before you leave Australia.
- Check your destination - confirm the country you're visiting is covered by travel packs.
- Turn on Wi-Fi calling - so you can make and receive calls over Wi-Fi overseas, with or without a pack.
- Check your phone supports VoLTE roaming - some countries have switched off their older networks, so calls can only be made over 4G using VoLTE. Not every VoLTE phone supports VoLTE when roaming, so check with your phone's manufacturer if you're unsure.
Activating a pack when you arrive
- Wait for your welcome message When your phone connects to a network overseas, you'll receive a welcome SMS (and email) listing the available packs.
- Text the pack code to 179 For example, text ROAM5 to 179. Sending the code is free, whether you're in Australia or overseas.
- Check your confirmation You'll receive an SMS confirming your pack is active.
- Start using your phone Your pack's data, calls and texts are ready to use.
How long your pack lasts
- Sydney time - pack validity is based on Sydney time (AEST or AEDT), and every pack expires at 11:59:59pm Sydney time on its last day.
- A bonus first day - the time between activating your pack and the first midnight (Sydney time) doesn't count towards its validity. For example, a 7-day pack activated at midday gets the rest of that day plus 7 full days.
- Moving between countries - if the next country is also covered, your active pack keeps working at no extra cost.
While you're away
- Check your balance - text BAL to 179 to see your remaining pack balance and expiry. This information can be up to 48 hours behind.
- Usage alerts - we'll send an SMS and email when you've used 50%, 85%, 95% and 100% of your pack's data.
- Adding another pack - you can add a new pack once your current one has expired, or once you've used 95% of its data. Packs don't renew automatically, and there's no reminder when a pack expires.
- More than one pack - if you have two packs active, data comes from the newest pack straight away, while calls and texts come from the pack that expires first. Adding the same pack again resets its allowances.
If roaming isn't available where you are
In countries where roaming isn't supported, your welcome message will let you know. You won't be able to make calls or use data on the local network. A local SIM or Wi-Fi is the best option in these countries, and Wi-Fi calling still works for calls back to Australia.
There's no pay-as-you-go roaming. Without an active travel pack, you can't make calls or use mobile data overseas. Wi-Fi calling still works for calls to Australian numbers whenever you're connected to Wi-Fi. Calls to overseas numbers aren't available while roaming or over Wi-Fi calling.
