Setting up your NetComm NF71
How to set up a NetComm NF71 Wi-Fi 7 gateway on FTTN/FTTB or Ethernet WAN nbn, and how to put it in bridge mode.
The NetComm NF71 is a Wi-Fi 7 gateway with a built-in VDSL modem, so it works on every nbn technology type. It's commonly supplied by Tangerine. Use this guide if you're bringing one across to Lightning IP, or yours has been factory reset.
Before you start
Check which nbn technology your address uses, then follow the matching section below. These are the settings our network needs:
| Setting | What to choose |
|---|---|
| Connection type | Dynamic IP (sometimes called IPoE, DHCP or Automatic) |
| VLAN / VLAN ID | Off (untagged), or leave the VLAN field blank |
| Username and password | Not needed |
If your NF71 came from Tangerine it may be set up for PPPoE. You can leave it that way, as we accept PPPoE with any username and password. Just make sure the VLAN setting is turned off.
Logging in to your NF71
- Connect a device Join the gateway's Wi-Fi using the details on the label, or plug a computer into a LAN port. Your device may say it has no internet at this stage; that's normal.
- Open the setup page In a web browser, go to 192.168.20.1.
- Sign in Enter admin as the username and the gateway login password printed on the label. It's different from the Wi-Fi password.
Setting up on FTTN or FTTB
- Connect to the phone socket Plug the phone cable into the DSL port on the gateway and the other end into your wall phone socket. Don't use any line filters or splitters.
- Power on and log in Switch the gateway on, wait a few minutes for it to start up, then log in as described above.
- Run the setup wizard Open the quick start or setup wizard.
- Choose the internet service Select VDSL.
- Choose the connection type Select Dynamic IP (or IPoE). Leave the VLAN field blank or turned off.
- Finish the wizard Set your time zone and Wi-Fi details, then finish. Allow up to 10 minutes for the DSL light to go solid, followed by the Internet light.
Setting up on FTTP, HFC, FTTC or Fixed Wireless
- Connect to your nbn equipment Run an ethernet cable from the gateway's WAN port to your nbn equipment: port UNI-D1 on an FTTP or Fixed Wireless Connection Box, the ethernet port on an HFC Connection Box, or the port labelled Gateway on an FTTC Connection Device.
- Power on and log in Switch the gateway on, wait a few minutes, then log in as described above.
- Run the setup wizard Open the quick start or setup wizard.
- Choose the internet service Select Ethernet WAN.
- Choose the connection type Select Dynamic IP (or IPoE). Leave the VLAN field blank or turned off.
- Finish the wizard Set your time zone and Wi-Fi details, then finish. The Internet light should turn on within a few minutes.
Using bridge mode with your own router (FTTN and FTTB)
On FTTN or FTTB you can set the NF71 to bridge mode so it acts only as a VDSL modem, and your own router or mesh system handles the connection and Wi-Fi.
Bridge mode is only needed on FTTN and FTTB. On other technologies, plug your own router straight into the nbn equipment instead.
- Connect with a cable Plug a computer into a LAN port and log in. Use a cable rather than Wi-Fi, because you'll turn Wi-Fi off along the way.
- Remove the existing internet connections In the internet (WAN) connection settings under Advanced, delete the existing internet connections.
- Add a VDSL bridge connection Add a new VDSL (PTM) connection and set its connection type to Bridge. Leave VLAN turned off and save.
- Turn off Wi-Fi In the Wi-Fi settings, turn off all Wi-Fi networks.
- Turn off DHCP In the LAN settings, turn off the DHCP server for IPv4 and IPv6, then save. Do this last, because you'll lose access to the setup page afterwards.
- Connect your router Run an ethernet cable from a LAN port on the NF71 to the WAN (internet) port on your own router.
- Set up your router Set your router's internet connection type to Dynamic IP with VLAN turned off.
To undo bridge mode, factory reset the NF71 using the reset button, then follow the FTTN or FTTB steps above.
If it doesn't connect
- DSL light flashing or off (FTTN/FTTB) - Check the phone cable, remove any filters or splitters, and try another phone socket.
- Internet light off - Check the internet service matches your technology (VDSL or Ethernet WAN), the connection type is Dynamic IP, and VLAN is turned off.
- Still no luck - Restart the gateway properly and follow our no internet connection troubleshooting guide, or get in touch.
