Where to place your modem or router for best signal
Where to put your modem or router for the strongest Wi-Fi signal, and the walls, cupboards and appliances to keep it away from.
Where you put your router makes a bigger difference to Wi-Fi than almost anything else.
- Central and high Put the router in the middle of your home, up off the floor. Wi-Fi radiates outward and downward.
- Out in the open Inside a cupboard or behind a TV, the signal is absorbed before it reaches the rest of the house.
- Away from interference Microwaves, cordless phones and large mirrors all degrade 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
- Away from thick walls Brick, concrete and anything with foil insulation are the hardest materials for Wi-Fi to pass through.
