Connecting nbn in a new development or greenfield estate

How nbn connections work in new estates, including pre-installation during the build and the nbn New Development Charge.

New housing estates (known as "greenfield" developments) have nbn infrastructure built in as part of the development, rather than retrofitted like established suburbs. Most new homes in these estates are connected with FTTP, and a few things work differently when you connect for the first time.

Your address may not show straight away

Your address may not appear as serviceable until the estate's nbn infrastructure is complete and registered with nbn Co, even if your home is finished. New estates are added progressively, so check close to your handover date rather than relying on an earlier check. If your address isn't showing yet, we can check the expected timeframe with nbn Co.

Pre-installation during the build

Some builders and developers arrange for the nbn equipment, including the nbn Connection Box, to be installed while the home is being built. If this has been done, all that's needed is a remote activation order - no technician visit - so you can be connected soon after handover.

Still in the build stage? Ask your builder to organise a pre-installation of the nbn equipment. It's the easiest way to avoid delays getting connected after you move in.

If the equipment hasn't been pre-installed

You'll need to order a service with us, and an nbn technician appointment will be booked to install the equipment at your home. We'll help you find a suitable time - it's worth ordering prior to your move-in date to allow for appointment availability.

The nbn New Development Charge

When a home in a new development is connected to the nbn for the first time, nbn Co applies a one-off New Development Charge of $300 (incl. GST). This is charged to your internet provider and will appear on your first bill. It only applies to the first connection at the address, so it won't be charged again if you later change plans or providers.
