Can I keep my existing modem when I switch to Lightning IP?

Whether your current modem will work when you change internet providers.

In many cases, yes - most modern nbn-compatible modems will work with Lightning IP, since the underlying nbn connection doesn't change when you switch providers.

What to check

Your modem needs to support your nbn technology type (for example, an FTTN modem needs a phone-line/VDSL port).

Our network accepts both IPoE (also called DHCP or Dynamic IP) and PPPoE connections, without a VLAN tag. If your modem is set up for PPPoE, you can leave your existing username and password in place - we'll accept whatever details are already there, so there's nothing to change.

Providers that typically work without changes

If you're switching from one of these providers, your modem is usually already set up in a way that works on our network:

IPoE, no VLAN tag

  • Aussie Broadband
  • Belong
  • Buddy Telco
  • Exetel (newer services)
  • Leaptel
  • Optus
  • Origin (newer plans)
  • Superloop
  • Telstra

PPPoE, no VLAN tag

  • Internode
  • Kogan Internet
  • TPG (most services)
  • Vodafone

No VLAN tag (IPoE or PPPoE, depending on the service)

  • iiNet (services activated after March 2023, or without an nbn phone service)
  • MATE
  • More
  • SpinTel
  • Tangerine

When a small change may be needed

Some providers add a VLAN tag to the connection. If your modem has a VLAN ID set - for example VLAN 2 on some older TPG and iiNet services, or VLAN 100 on iPrimus and some Dodo services - you'll need to turn the VLAN setting off before it will connect to our network.

Provider settings can vary by service and change over time, so if you're not sure how your modem is configured, get in touch and we'll help you check.

When a new modem is a better option

If your current modem is older, doesn't support your plan's speed tier, or you're upgrading to a higher tier, a new modem may get better results - we can advise or supply one if needed.

We'll send configuration details for your existing modem, or a pre-configured modem if you've ordered one from us, ahead of your switch date.
